Tenuta San Guido 'Guidalberto'

Description
Another example of quality over conformity. In Italy, as in all of the EU, wines receive a governmental assessment to certify authenticity and adherence to the well-defined laws that govern wine production. In Italy, the highest designation, DOCG, command the highest prices assuming the best quality, followed by DOC, IGT/IGP, and Vino da Tavolo. Wine makers in Tuscany long understood the region’s potential to produce world-class wines made from “International” grape varieties, such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. However, those grape varieties are not eligible to receive a DOCG or even a DOC designation. Understanding this perceived setback, a group of wineries turned to the power of marketing to coin the term Super Tuscan, wines that carry a “lessor” IGT status but are arguably some of the best in the world.
